Yard Sale Tips

Updated: Jan 20

I admit I haven’t been to a yard sale in a while, but back in the day I was jokingly dubbed, ‘The Yard Sale Queen.’ I scored some awesome deals I wasn’t shy to boast about. I even thought about getting an ‘I break for yard sales’ bumper sticker. Hey, it was tough starting out with nothing. I needed a $0.75 blender, badly. Okay, that price might be unheard of today. It was avocado green, if that tells you how long ago that was. Anyway, there are still some great deals to be found. And, who doesn’t want to save money this day and time. Below are some tips to get started and some websites to find out where the yard sales are in your area.

Yard Sale Tips

• Cash is still king. Make sure to bring small bills to make change easier. Some sellers might take Venmo or Cash App, if you’re short on cash. But, don’t count on it.

• Plan your route before the day of the sale. This will save you time. You can always look the evening before and the morning of the sale to add any late yard sale ads

• Inspect all items well and make sure they are in good condition and have no missing parts before purchasing. Ask to use an electrical outlet to test electronics. Take various size batteries along with you for testing items that might be missing the batteries. Make sure clothes are stain free and have no rips.

• Google items before buying, if you don’t know the retail price. Electronics have a model number you can search to find the correct price on the exact model number

• Don’t over pay. It’s best to walk away than to regret a purchase. If you’re patient, another deal will likely come along soon

• Set a budget. Yard sales can save a lot of money on purchases. But, you can still spend over your budget, if you’re not careful

• Start out early to get the most popular deals.

• Neighborhood sales and church sales can offer a lot in one location and save you some driving time

• Search for items at yard sales thoroughly, but quickly, so you can make it around to all the great sales in your area

• It’s okay to politely haggle for a better deal. You never know, you could save a little more money.
