Summerween: A Fun Summer Tradition

Updated: Jun 3

Summerween is a tradition that began during the pandemic when we were looking for ways to entertain ourselves at home during the summer. My kids loved it so much that they have looked forward to it every summer since. The idea is to recreate Halloween with a summer twist. You can host it at a pool, splash pad, in your own backyard, or even indoors. All you need is a few bags of candy, some Summerween-themed food, bags for trick-or-treating, and Halloween face masks, googly eye glasses, disguise glasses, or simple lightweight homemade costumes.

SUMMERWEEN FOOD IDEAS

  • Watermelon Monster: Draw a face on a watermelon with a black Sharpie. Punch holes with a hammer and nail, and stick lollipops in the holes for hair.

  • Mandarin Orange ‘Pumpkins’: Draw a jack-o’-lantern face on mandarin oranges with a black Sharpie.

  • Cheese Puffs Jack-o’-lanterns: Draw a face on a clear cellophane bag, fill with cheese puffs, and tie it shut.

  • Ghost Lollipops: Drape two white coffee filters over a Tootsie Pop. Tie a black ribbon around the neck and draw a face with a black Sharpie.

  • Ghost or Pumpkin Cheesesticks: Draw a ghost face on a mozzarella cheese stick or a jack-o’-lantern face on a cheddar cheese stick with a black Sharpie.

  • Orange Soda Jack-o’-lantern: Remove the label from an orange soda bottle and draw a jack-o’-lantern face with a black Sharpie. Tie leaves made of construction paper around the neck.

  • Orange Floats: Draw a jack-o’-lantern face on clear cups. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and fill with orange soda.

TRICK OR TREATING

Have adults spread out with bags of candy. Kids can walk the ‘trail’ with their face masks, disguise eye glasses, or lightweight costumes and trick-or-treat. Since it’s warm, it’s best to keep the costumes light or just stick to a face mask. Dollar Tree usually carries face masks year-round.

GAMES AND ENTERTAINMENT

If you don’t have a pool or splash pad to entertain the kids, consider getting some water balloons, water soakers/guns, inexpensive toys, or play some games.

HALLOWEEN MOVIE

Show a kid-friendly Halloween movie outdoors or indoors. Add some popcorn and have a ghoulishly good time.

After starting our Summerween tradition, we discovered that a TV show we had never seen had an episode about Summerween. Maybe we read about it somewhere and it was subconsciously in our minds. Either way, this is a fun tradition! Let me know if you try it.
